I have a url to a page. The page source is an xml file. How would I access the page source of a link usiing javascript, and then subsequently parse the xml into something usable?

Why do we need to learn web technologies if there are web content management systems that can build entire websites with ease? By using web content management systems, can we do all the work that can be done using html, css, xml, javascript, php etc?
