what are the best programming languages to learn(HTML, XML, SQL, etc.)?

What is the best order to learn them and how long does it take to achieve a intermediate understanding of each?
I’m not currently in an IT field but I am interested in getting trained in the languages that will provide me with the best chance of getting myself in an IT position then feeling my way out from there. So what would be the best languages to learn in this case?

Depends on what you are trying to do career wise.

HTML is easy to learn, and useful for many people. I have never really used it professionally.

If you want to be a network administrator, learn Perl, Python, VBScript, etc.

If you want to be a programmer, learn C++, Java, etc.

The .NET languages are a fantastic resource to have, especially with Silverlight poised to overthrow Adobe Flash’s dominance on the internet.

How quickly you learn is up to you. Some people have a much easier time than others.

What are you looking for? HTML is good for designing webpages, XML is good for designing games and web applets, C++ is good for all around program work.

None of those are programming languages. They are all essentially scripting languages used by applications.

However, details aside. Start with HTML and XML, then move on to SQL and PHP.

Python is a simple scripting language that’s easy to learn. It’s not as fast as C++ but you’ll learn it faster and be able to do things with it faster.
