The way I understand it, Microsoft used something in Microsoft Office Word that violated a patent held by another company. They have to stop selling it by January 11, 2010 — BUT they only have to stop selling the part that violates the patent.

They’ll pull that part out and continue selling Word without it.

Or they’ll license the part in violation.

Or they’ll buy the winning company outright.

Word is not going away. Expect to see an Office Update soon, though.

    Hope that helps.

Microsoft infringed on i4i patent so they have to remove XML.

It will not be removing XML but making some changes to the structure. They have received a delay which will allow them to complete development of Office 2010 in time and thus it will be one of the solutions available.

It is not as disastorous as it sounds.

Actually reading the details the feature of Word to manipulate XML files is what is in question. Not the use of XML in word.

  4. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  5. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
